    Back to School   2013

Dear Parents,

Welcome to our grade one classroom blog.  It will be an exciting year watching the children grow and learn.  I am looking forward to meeting all of you and working together to make this a year of happy memories and academic success for each child.

We are fortunate this year to have an intern teacher join our classroom.  Her name is Emily Donnelly and together we will be teaching the grade one curriculum to our students.  I am always happy to open our doors to students from the university because they bring fresh new ideas and knowledge to the classroom.  As an intern teacher, Miss Donnelly will be evaluated by our principal, Mr. Bryant, who will be visiting our classroom regularly.  This is a great chance for the students to get to know Mr. Bryant a little better than they would usually be able to do.

Our first topic or theme will be “Colours”.  This is a science unit but we will be reading colour stories and learning colour words in language arts as well.  In math we will begin by learning how to write numbers using numerals and words.  We have a thirty minute Physical Education class everyday.  Sometimes it will be indoors in the gym and sometimes it will be outdoors in the field.  Suitable clothing and running shoes are important for this class.

We will begin Library Exchange next week and our class is scheduled for Tuesday.  Students are allowed to sign out one book each week. They may decide to take it home or leave it at school for free reading times.  The choice will be theirs. Students need to return their library book in order to check out another one. The task of remembering to return their borrowed books helps to encourage responsibility.  Please encourage them to be responsible.  It helps to build self-esteem.

I look forward to meeting you at “Meet the Teacher Night” Sept. 12th.  This will take place in our classroom (room 20) and will be a come and go event between 6 and 7 pm. However, if you are unable to attend, I will be sending home all information discussed in a newsletter the next day.  If you have any questions feel free to call me at the school and we can set up a short meeting.

                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                         Mrs. Rita Johnston
