Hi everyone!  The following is an update to let you know of all the happenings from now until Family break!
First off, I hope that you are enjoying our 3 Schools 1 Book project   I sent an email out asking for help. If you are able to spare any time at all, on ANY day between January 28th and January 30th, please let me know! I will have all the materials ready for you to pull students to work in the hall, and help them stitch. We’ve chosen this special art project because at the end of 3 Schools 1 Book, we will be having a giant School wide Art Walk, with all of the amazing art being displayed in the halls.
If you haven’t yet, please take some time to visit this site: http://mikewevers.wix.com/one-and-only-ivan#
This is the website with all the information about our 3S1B project.  The best part is, if you miss a reading or two, your child can ‘catch up’ by listening to a Lethbridge Celebrity reading different chapters!

.   Happy Birthday to:Maiya on January 3rd. Qiao on January 8th.
Dylan on January 13th.Angus on January 18th.Madison on February 14th.
If your child has a birthday in July or August, we will celebrate them on the corresponding day in June  (July 8th birthday...June 8th celebration).

We are heading off to Home Hardware for a field trip! This ties into our “Building Things” Science unit which we will kick off once we’re finished with our 5 Senses.  We are heading to Home Hardware on Thursday February 14th. We’ll leave MMH shortly after 10 am. and return by 11:30 am.  If you are able to drive on this day, please let me know! This is one of my favourite field trips, and the staff at Home Hardware are so welcoming!
On February 14th we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day at school.  More details about this day are to come!
We have booked Friday, February 15th to celebrate our 100th day! This is a center-based day where all the Grades 1 and 2 classes celebrate 100 days of school with different centers in the gym. This day is honestly a blast, and the kids have so much fun with it. I am looking for 2 parent volunteers, who are willing to run a center for this morning.

Learning Updates!
In Language Arts we are starting to work on long vowels, consonant digraphs (like ch, sh, wh, ph, th…) and blends (like br, sl, st, sp…). We continue to learn new sight words and spelling words. We have also started doing more writing activities.  Please work with your child to try and express themselves in full sentences when responding to questions. This will help their writing skills improve.
In Math, we are continuing our Addition unit.  We are learning about adding doubles, and to go with that, odd and even numbers. Soon there will be some flashcards and activities coming home to help with doubles addition facts.  Knowing doubles facts helps SO MUCH with addition and subtraction, and they only way to really learn them, is by memorization.  Students will be assessed on the following doubles facts early in March.  Please reinforce their knowledge of these and practice at home from time to time over the next month and a half.

In Social, we have been talking about different landmarks in our city. We will now look at our province and our country.
In Science we are wrapping up our Senses unit and will soon begin our Building unit.  If you have any un-needed boxes of any size, cardboard tubes of all sizes, egg cartons, straws, craft sticks, cards, cardboard, Connects, Lego or anything else that children might be able to construct with, please send it to school for our “Building Things” Science unit.  This unit is scheduled to begin in February and we will continue to collect until we have enough materials

Going ‘green’:  In attempts to be more eco-friendly, the school is no longer giving out newsletters.  You may check out our school website www.lethsd.ab.ca/mmh for the newsletter.
